As a newly constructed shopping destination in Kumasi, Ghana, the Kumasi City Mall required a comprehensive wayfinding system that would help visitors navigate the space efficiently. The challenge was to create a system that would be intuitive and accessible to the local population, considering cultural context and potential language barriers.
The wayfinding system needed to include a custom icon set that would be immediately recognizable and understandable across different demographics. Additionally, the design had to complement the mall's architecture and interior design while maintaining visibility and clarity throughout the space.
Working with Boogertman & Partners, we developed a wayfinding system that combined clear typography with a custom-designed icon system specifically created for Kumasi City Mall. The icon system was designed to be universally understood, with careful consideration of local cultural contexts and preferences.
The signage design incorporated elements inspired by traditional Ghanaian patterns and colors, creating a visual language that resonated with the local community while remaining functional and modern. Directional signage, mall maps and store identifiers were strategically placed throughout the mall to ensure visitors could easily navigate the space.
The final wayfinding system successfully integrated with the mall's architecture, enhancing the shopping experience for visitors while celebrating the local cultural identity. The icon system proved particularly effective in overcoming language barriers and providing intuitive navigation throughout the shopping center.
